State of new social media to be discussed at OSCE meeting – Ahmad Shahidov made a speech

atet22.09.2015The next sessions of Human Dimension Implementation Meeting of the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) has been continued on September 22.

The meeting attended by high ranked officials, ministers, Ambassadors, NGOs representatives and human rights advocates from 57 OSCE participating states, featured discussions on information technologies, social networks, internet, human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Joining the discussions Ahmad Shahidov Head of Azerbaijani Institute for Democracy and Human Rights (AIDHR) made a speech on the current state of social networks and access to internet in Azerbaijan. In his speech, head of AIDHR highlighted advantages and disadvantages of these networks.

Ahmad Shahidov also gave a rise to the misuse of these social networks for various purposes. He underscored that the tendencies of abusing honor and dignity, in particular those who engaged in social and political activities, interference into private life via these networks became prevalent.

Head of AIDHR also emphasized that several political parties make use of social networks for their promotion; in some cases they spread false and blackmailing information. He went on to say that these networks are another source of threat of terrorism by adding importance of joint efforts on combating against these sorts of cybercrimes.
