Dr. Ahmad Shahidov spoke at the OSCE about smear campaigns in the media during the elections

On May 28, a two-day conference on “Media Literacy and Democracy: Supplementary Human Dimension Meeting II” organized by the Maltese OSCE Chairpersonship, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) continued its work in Vienna, the capital of Austria.

At the meeting attended by ambassadors, diplomats and government officials of 57 OSCE member states, issues of media literacy and democracy in the OSCE region were discussed.

The human rights defender Dr. Ahmad Shahidov, who participated in the meeting, drew attention to smear campaigns carried out in media and social networks during the elections and shared his personal experience with OSCE member diplomats. Dr. Ahmad Shahidov said that he was a candidate for deputy during the 2015 and 2020 Parliament (Milli Majlis) elections in Azerbaijan, noted that blackmail, lies and slanderous news were published about him in some local media outlets at the order of his main rival. Human rights defender Ahmad Shahidov, noting that such cases are intensifying on the eve of the elections, asked the participants of the meeting to comment on this issue.
