The initiative emerged particularly after Hungary repeatedly blocked decisions related to aid for Ukraine and sanctions against Russia in recent years, and it is now being viewed as an important signal regarding the future governance model of the European Union. Political analyst Ahmad Shahidov commented on the issue in an interview with ARB24 Television.

Ahmad Shahidov stated that the European Union is increasingly struggling to function under its old institutional mechanisms: “The EU is entering a new phase of enlargement, and the number of member states may exceed 30 in the coming years. Under such circumstances, the ability of a single country to block strategic decisions creates serious concern in Brussels. Especially in the context of the war in Ukraine, the European Union wants to become a more flexible and operational political center capable of making faster decisions.”

According to the political analyst, the idea of limiting veto rights is both legally and politically complicated: “One of the fundamental principles of the European Union is the legal equality of member states. Therefore, granting limited powers to new members during a transition period could trigger serious debates in the future. Nevertheless, the overall trend in Brussels indicates that the EU is moving toward a more centralized model of governance.”

Discussions on restricting the veto rights of newly admitted member states for a certain period have sparked serious political debate in Brussels.
