Recent remarks by NATO Military Committee Chairman Giuseppe Cavo Dragone that alliance member states are moving forces closer to the region have intensified discussions about a possible new phase in the Middle East crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on ARB24 Television&#8217;s \u201cAgenda\u201d program, political analyst Ahmad Shahidov stated that developments around the Strait of Hormuz are increasingly forcing new international actors to become involved in the crisis: \u201cAlthough U.S. President Donald Trump called on NATO countries during the early days of the conflict, alliance members maintained that the Middle East crisis was not directly related to NATO. However, as time passes, disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz are having a growing negative impact on global energy markets. International cargo transportation, energy supplies, and the critical situation in the Gulf countries are putting European and broader Western energy security at risk. Therefore, NATO member states are now preparing for possible military confrontation scenarios.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to Ahmad Shahidov, Iran has recently introduced significant technological improvements to its air defense systems: \u201cThe reported downing of a U.S. F-15 fighter aircraft over Iranian airspace demonstrates that Tehran has substantially strengthened its air defense capabilities. Assessments suggesting the use of modern Chinese-made air defense systems indicate that China may be indirectly supporting Iran in the current regional confrontation. Under such circumstances, the involvement of NATO countries in military operations could lead to a much broader conflict and potentially create a new line of geopolitical confrontation between NATO and China.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ahmad Shahidov added that if Iran were to launch a missile attack against a NATO member state or target ships sailing under NATO member flags in the Strait of Hormuz, this could serve as grounds for NATO military action against Iran: \u201cAt present, such a risk does not appear imminent because negotiations are continuing. Contacts between the United States and Iran are ongoing with Pakistan acting as a mediator. The positions of both sides remain highly rigid, but as long as dialogue continues, there is still a possibility of reaching common ground. At the same time, military contingency plans remain on the table, and the situation could escalate at any moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shahidov.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/arb24_31.05.2026.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-19541\"
