After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the armenians, who began to make territorial claims against Azerbaijan and attacked, took action to occupy Khojaly, which they blockaded in the last days of 1991, and which has the only airport in the region.
On February 25, 1992, the armenians, intensifying their months-long attacks, committed one of the bloodiest massacres of the 20th century against the civilian population and the prisoners who were brutally tortured.
613 defenseless Azerbaijani citizens lost their lives in Khojaly, where 7 thousand people used to live. During the massacre 70 old people and 63 children were killed by armenians. 487 people survived the massacre with serious wounds, armenian armed forces captured 1275 people, the fate of 150 of them is still unknown.
8 families were completely destroyed in the massacre, 25 children lost both parents, and 130 children lost one of their parents.
Forensic examinations of the murdered persons and witness statements clearly prove that the residents of Khojaly were subjected to unimaginable torture. Images and photographs taken at that time reveal the magnitude of the massacre.
On April 22, 2010, the European Court of Human Rights considered what happened in Khojaly as equivalent to war crimes or crimes against humanity.
