During his official visit to Azerbaijan, Chairman of the Senate of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani met on October 31 with a group of media representatives and civil society leaders.
The meeting was also attended by Dr. Ahmad Shahidov, human rights defender and Head of the Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights.
In his remarks, Ahmad Shahidov spoke about Azerbaijan–Pakistan strategic partnership, regional security, and peace initiatives.
He conveyed his warm greetings to the brotherly people of Pakistan, emphasizing that the people of Azerbaijan will never forget Pakistan’s support during both the First and Second Karabakh Wars.
Discussions also covered Pakistan’s peace talks with Afghanistan, the protection of regional stability, and the importance of upholding international law in the Kashmir issue.
Ahmad Shahidov praised the justice- and dialogue-based policy of the Government of Pakistan and the commitment of Chairman Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani to democratic values, noting: “As the late Benazir Bhutto once said, ‘Democracy is the best revenge.’ Mr. Gilani, you are one of the leaders who have truly brought this message to life in both politics and personal example.”
The parties also exchanged views on defense cooperation, humanitarian diplomacy, and the strengthening of civil society relations.
Ahmad Shahidov added that Azerbaijan and Pakistan are not just friends but brotherly nations, and that this brotherhood will continue to grow stronger in the years ahead.
The meeting took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere and concluded in the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation.
