Diplomatic efforts surrounding the Russia-Ukraine war continue. U.S. President Donald Trump’s initiative to halt attacks on energy infrastructure, the European Union’s new sanctions against Russia, and discussions about holding elections in Ukraine remain key issues on the international agenda. However, differences between the parties continue to pose serious challenges to ending the war.
In an interview with ARB24 Television, political commentator Ahmad Shahidov said that one of the main reasons ceasefire initiatives have failed to deliver results is the lack of mutual trust between Russia and Ukraine. He stressed that statements about halting attacks on energy infrastructure must be accompanied by concrete commitments and monitoring mechanisms. Shahidov also noted that the European Union’s new sanctions could place long-term pressure on Russia’s military capabilities, although their effectiveness would depend on how rigorously they are implemented.
Shahidov emphasized that security conditions must be ensured and the legitimacy of the democratic process protected before elections can be held in Ukraine. He said U.S. mediation efforts could play an important role in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, he stressed that lasting peace requires both sides to honor their commitments and respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and international law. According to Shahidov, temporary ceasefire initiatives can pave the way for a broader peace agreement only when backed by concrete action.
