On March 5, 2026, a drone attack was carried out by Iran against Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan region. According to reports, one of the kamikaze drones struck the area of the airport in the city of Nakhchivan, while another drone exploded near a secondary school in a residential area. The incident caused damage to civilian infrastructure and several people were reportedly injured. The attack has sparked strong anger and concern across Azerbaijan.

Speaking to Sky News Arabia, political analyst Ahmad Shahidov said that Azerbaijan has the capability to repel any attacks against its territory. According to him, the drone strike on Nakhchivan is a clear violation of international law and targeting civilian facilities should be considered an act of terrorism.

Ahmad Shahidov also noted that Azerbaijan has already delivered an official diplomatic protest note to Iran and that the country’s armed forces have been placed on the highest level of mobilization readiness. He emphasized that if such attacks are repeated, Azerbaijan reserves the right to respond in order to protect its citizens and territorial integrity.
