Third day of PACE Spring Session concludes: Turkiye in the spotlight

The third day of the Spring Session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) concluded today. No special discussion was held regarding Azerbaijan. Only German MP Frank Schwabe criticized the Azerbaijani government during his speech.

The main topic of the day was the human rights situation and the state of democracy in Turkiye. In particular, the imprisonment of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoğlu drew significant attention from MPs.

The majority of speakers strongly criticized Turkiye and especially the ruling AKP government. They demanded the release of Ekrem Imamoğlu and called on Istanbul University to reinstate his diploma. Serious concerns were also raised about the independence of the judiciary and the weakening of democratic institutions in Turkiye.

It is expected that other topics will be brought to the agenda in the coming days of the session.
