The political climate in Armenia has escalated dramatically in recent days. Impeachment initiatives against Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, former President Levon Ter-Petrosyan’s support for the Catholicos of All Armenians, Karekin II, and rising mutual accusations in political circles have led to a serious domestic crisis. How these developments will affect the peace process and Armenia-Azerbaijan relations has now become one of the region’s most pressing issues.
Political analyst Dr. Ahmad Shahidov also commented on the matter during ARB24 TV’s “Gündəm” program. He stated that the ongoing political confrontation and power struggle in Armenia could further complicate the situation in the region. According to Shahidov, the impeachment attempts against Pashinyan and the involvement of religious leaders in politics, along with their close ties to the opposition, risk completely destabilizing the country.
Dr. Ahmad Shahidov emphasized that this internal conflict in Armenia could significantly impact the ongoing peace talks in the South Caucasus. While underlining Azerbaijan’s commitment to continuing negotiations, he pointed out that Armenia’s internal political chaos could delay the process. Moreover, he warned that this situation also increases the risk of new military clashes, escalating tensions in the region.
The program also featured a comprehensive analysis of Armenia’s political landscape, the opposition’s plans, Pashinyan’s current position, and the future of Armenia-Azerbaijan relations. Dr. Ahmad Shahidov concluded that unless the Armenian government resolves its domestic crisis, it will not be able to successfully continue the peace talks — a development that poses a serious threat both to Yerevan and to regional stability.
