“The suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty shakes regional stability” — Dr. Ahmad Shahidov made a call to the UN and World Bank

In May, India’s unilateral suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty further deepened the water crisis in South Asia. The violation of this agreement, which for years regulated the sharing of water resources in the region, has once again raised the risk of confrontation between India and Pakistan. Although this issue has been overlooked amid the war around Iran, the situation that has emerged could lead to a new and more dangerous conflict in the region.

Human rights defender Dr. Ahmad Shahidov, living in Washington, released a video appeal to the international community. He stated that turning water resources into a tool of political pressure poses a serious threat not only to Pakistan but to the humanitarian and ecological security of the entire region. Dr. Ahmad Shahidov called on international organizations, particularly the UN and the World Bank, to respond to this issue immediately.

According to him, while the world’s attention is focused on the war in Iran, the water crisis between India and Pakistan could lay the groundwork for a broader and catastrophic war, and it is unacceptable to remain silent.
