Intel leak on US operation against Iran sparks debate — Dr. Ahmad Shahidov speaks to CGTN from Washington

Washington, June 28 — Following the recent US military operation against Iran, widespread debates have emerged both within the country and in the international media. The leak of an intelligence report regarding the operation’s outcome has drawn attention in Washington. It remains unclear who leaked this information and for what purpose, but the incident has sparked various reactions among the public and political circles.

Political commentator Dr. Ahmad Shahidov spoke to CGTN from Washington about the issue. He stated that recent reports in the US media have increased scrutiny on the White House’s Middle East policy.

“The main topic of discussion here is not the result of the operation itself, but how and by whom the intelligence documents were leaked to the media. Allegedly, these materials were passed on by some discontented individuals within the Pentagon. However, official authorities have yet to confirm this and say the investigation is ongoing,” Dr. Ahmad Shahidov noted.

There are differing opinions among the American public regarding both the operation and the leaked reports. Some view the operation as necessary, while others express concern over the risk of a possible war. Dr. Ahmad Shahidov pointed out that President Donald Trump’s earlier campaign pledge to “keep the US out of endless wars” has also become a topic of renewed discussion. “Some citizens want the White House to stay true to that promise, while others believe the security situation in the region requires military measures. Meanwhile, Democrats are demanding more detailed information from the administration,” he added.

So far, the US Department of Defense and the White House have not issued a comprehensive statement regarding the matter. Hearings on the operation and the intel leak are expected to be held in Congress in the coming days.
