“If Iran quits the nuclear treaty, it may face new sanctions” – Ahmad Shahidov told ARB24 channel

Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani announced that 60 percent enriched uranium is stored underground in the country and urged Europe not to activate the “trigger mechanism.” Otherwise, Tehran may consider withdrawing from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). This statement has sparked new tensions in the international arena.

Commenting on the issue, political analyst Ahmad Shahidov stressed that Tehran’s position is a clear diplomatic warning: “Iran is showing Europe that if the process of automatically re-imposing sanctions begins, the chance for dialogue at the diplomatic table will disappear. This puts Europe before a choice – either diplomacy continues or confrontation deepens further. With this statement, Tehran is mostly trying to exert psychological pressure.”

Ahmad Shahidov also noted that Iran’s withdrawal from the NPT does not look like a realistic step: “Such a decision would push the country into international isolation and expose it to new sanctions. At present, this option is more of a political maneuver and a tool of threat diplomacy. However, if Europe really activates the trigger mechanism, the position of hardliners inside Iran could strengthen, and this scenario may become a real agenda.”
