A possible fragmentation or civil war in Iran could pose serious risks for Azerbaijan – Ahmad Shahidov tells ARB24 Television

The mass protests observed in Iran in recent days have moved beyond the framework of social and economic discontent and are increasingly taking on a clear political character. Demonstrations that began amid rising prices, unemployment, and long-accumulated public dissatisfaction are now accompanied by anti-government slogans in a number of cities. The harsh intervention by security forces, internet restrictions, and information blockades indicate that tensions in the country are intensifying further.

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview with ARB24 Television, political commentator Ahmad Shahidov stated that the processes unfolding in Iran are no longer limited to internal protests and are gradually acquiring a geopolitical dimension. According to Shahidov, as the protests take on a political character, external influences are also becoming more pronounced: “The role of the United States and Israel stands out in particular. Military scenarios involving Iran are now being openly discussed, making the regional situation even more sensitive.”

Ahmad Shahidov emphasized that possible scenarios involving the fragmentation of Iran or the outbreak of a civil war could create serious risks for Azerbaijan. In his view, such a situation could lead to social and economic threats, instability in border regions, and humanitarian challenges: “Azerbaijan must monitor these developments very carefully and continue its balanced and calm policy aimed at preserving regional stability.”
