The war unfolding in the Middle East, particularly in Iran, has become one of the main issues on the international agenda. Against this backdrop, the peace negotiations between Ukraine and Russia, conducted with the mediation of the United States, are gradually moving out of the spotlight. Although several rounds of talks have taken place in Abu Dhabi and Geneva in recent months, the fate of the meeting planned for next week in Abu Dhabi appears uncertain amid the current geopolitical situation.
Political analyst Ahmad Shahidov told ARB24 that the expanding war in the Middle East is diverting Washington’s attention from the Ukraine–Russia conflict: “At the moment, Washington’s full attention and resources are focused on the war in Iran. As a result, the United States’ mediation mission between Ukraine and Russia has effectively entered a more passive phase, and the negotiation process has lost its previous momentum.”
According to Ahmad Shahidov, the shift in international priorities is also affecting the diplomatic resolution of the Ukraine–Russia war: “The tension in the Middle East and the possibility of a large-scale war scenario have directed the attention of Western capitals entirely toward that region. This temporarily pushes the discussion of the Ukraine–Russia war and the peace negotiations into the background.”
