Ahmad Shahidov: “We hope Mr. Pedro Agramunt will work more closely with Azerbaijan”

shahidovChief of AIDHR Ahmad Shahidov: “PACE`s appointment a new rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan is related to the attention to this problem”

Preparation of a report on political prisoners in Azerbaijan is committed to PACE deputy Pedro Agramunt (Spain), who is already the rapporteur of the Monitoring Committee of the Assembly on the implementation of the country’s commitments to the CoE.

This decision was taken on June 25 meeting of the PACE Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights.

As the new rapporteur on political prisoners, the initiator of this discussion Irish Deputy Michael McNamara nominated Dutch MP Pieter Omtsigt. However, he was voted only by a total of 19 MPs.

For an alternative solution to the problem – laying mission to prepare a report on political prisoners on Agramunt – 29 deputies voted.

Sharing his views on the appointment a new rapporteur on political prisoners in Azerbaijan chief of Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights (AIDHR) Ahmad Shahidov told that the realization of this appointment is related to the attention to this problem: “Although spanish MP Pedro Agramunt is not active as previous speakers, we hope that he will allocate more attention to Azerbaijan and will take great interest with undertaken work. Up to now, Andres Herkel and Christoph Strasser, who were rapporteur on political prisioners in Azerbaijan, have done enough works. We believe that newly appointed Pedro Agramunt will meet the expectations as well. As AIDHR we are ready to work with Mr. Agramunt”
