Parliamentary elections held in Azerbaijan to be discussed at the Standing Committee meeting of PACE

pace_sofia2Standing Committee meeting of Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has been held in Sofia, Bulgaria

On November 27 Standing Committee meeting of PACE has been conducted in Sofia, Bulgaria. The issues of human rights, migration, discrimination and elections have been discussed at the meeting. The committee’s meeting also featured debates on parliamentary elections of Kirgizstan (October 4th, 2015), presidential elections of Belorussia (October 11th, 2015) and parliamentary elections in Azerbaijan and Turkey (November 1st, 2015).

Ahmad Shahidov, Head of the Azerbaijani Institute for Democracy and Human Rights (AIDHR) also attended the Committee’s meeting.

In his report, PACE observer mission, Spanish MP Jordi Xucla Costa indicated that parliamentary elections which held in Azerbaijan on November 1 was democratic and in lined with Azerbaijani legislation.

The report noted the importance of Azerbaijan’s taking into consideration principles of Venice Commission and touched on human rights issue. It also included concerns over the imprisonment of human rights advocates, journalists and activists.
