Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has started its winter session on January 25. As it was expected to the winter session had heated discussions. PACE’s including two resolutions in relation to Armenia on January 26 disappointed official Yerevan and by its all diplomatic efforts, Armenia tries to avoid recognition of these sanctions.

While PACE disapproved the report titled “Escalation of violence in Nagorno-Karabakh and other occupied territories of Azerbaijan” prepared by British parliamentarian Robert Walter, the report prepared by Milica Markovic on “Inhabitants of frontier regions of Azerbaijan are deliberately deprived of water” has been approved.

Attending PACE Winter session Ahmad Shahidov, human rights defender and head of AIDHR positively evaluated the winter sessions for Azerbaijan: In fact, the winter session was political struggle between Azerbaijan and Armenia. The motion on the adoption of two documents on the same day was unexpected to Armenia. No wonder over the last month Armenian mass media harshly criticized inability of Armenian external policy. Both Armenian government and it lobbies could managed to achieve disapproval of only one document with minority. Regarding the second, it has been accepted and it was the success of Azerbaijani diplomacy since the religious factor prevails in Europe. Majority of parliamentarians at the PACE are Christians and therefore fear of voting against Armenia. Nevertheless, recognition of the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh and other territories of Azerbaijan based on reports was important success. As usual Azerbaijan once again faced double standard of Europe. In fact, PACE illustrated so called balanced political stance between the conflict sides by approving one report and disapproving another one. Nevertheless, Azerbaijan scored to the opposite side at the PACE winter session. Unlike past session this time Azerbaijan is appropriated represented at the discussions”.
