The National Human Rights Committee (NHRC) and the High Commissioner for Human Rights organised in Doha an international conference on “Human rights-based approach to conflict situations in the Arab region” on February 20 and 21. Held under the patronage of HE the Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa al-Thani, and in collaboration with the General Secretariat of the Council of Arab Interior Ministers and the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions, the conference addressed several challenging issues and human rights situations in several countries across the Arab region.
Participated in the event, Head of Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights Dr. Ahmad Shahidov shared his thoughts about his meetings and contacts: “As every year, at the invitation of the Qatar National Human Rights Committee, I participate in an international human rights conference held in Doha, Qatar. The conference brings together about 500 participants including government officials, representatives from United Nations peacekeeping missions, international and regional organisations as well as human rights institutions, policy researchers, experts from treaty bodies, UN special rapporteurs and representatives from offices of the high commissioner for human rights in the Arab region. The conference aims to promote human rights approach in addressing conflict situations and crises in the world. As a muslim human rights defender, I expressed my opinion during the face to face meetings and plenary sessions, spoke about the challenges facing Azerbaijan, as well as the 1 million refugees and internally displaced people suffering from Nagornoy-Karabakh conflict.”
Spoke about the Qatar-Azerbaijan relations, Ahmad Shahidov said that there is a great potential in this field as well: “Qatar is one of the beneficiaries of the oil era of the 1970 years of the last century. Oil and natural gas dramatically changed the course of the country, leaving a deep impression in its social and economic face. Qatar’s quite weak national economy, thanks to oil, reached a high level in a short period of time. I think that there are a lot of common features and interests between the two countries. In this regard, I see Qatar as the most reliable business partner of Azerbaijan in the Gulf region. There is a great potential for development of relations between the two countries. And I am confident that this potential will be used effectively.”
