Conference on “Azerbaijan-Georgia: 100 Years of Our Republics” was held in Tbilisi

A conference on “Azerbaijan-Georgia: 100 Years of Our Republics” was held at the Georgian National Academy of Sciences (GNAS) on May 23.

The event, organized by the Azerbaijani Reformist Youth Public Union and the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, was attended by representatives of the Azerbaijani Embassy, Georgian scientific circles, prominent political and public figures from both countries, as well as students.

At first, national anthems of Georgia and Azerbaijan were performed at the event.

Opening the conference, Director of the Department of the Georgian Technical University Mr. Nikoloz Metreveli spoke about the history of the two countries and stressed the necessity of joint work of the youth of the two countries.

Later, vice-president of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences Mr. Roin Metreveli spoke about the friendly relations between Azerbaijan and Georgia and recalled the visits of the National Leader Heydar Aliyev to Georgia, his meetings in the academy. He said that today both nations celebrate one of the most dear, holy holidays: “This is an example of our friendship and brotherhood.” The Academic Roin Metreveli also spoke about the friendly relations between the National Academies of Sciences of Azerbaijan and Georgia, as well as other scientific institutions and scholars, emphasizing the role of the development of these relations.

Then the first secretary of the Azerbaijani Embassy to Georgia Mr. Rahim Rahimzade spoke about the importance of the event. He said that Azerbaijan and Georgia were historically neighbors and friendly countries: “This friendship is developing and strengthening today with the rising line.”

Farid Shahbazli, the chairman of the “Reformist Youth” Public Union, especially emphasized the role of youth in the development of friendship and brotherhood between Azerbaijan and Georgia.

Later, the head of the Azerbaijan Institute for Democracy and Human Rights, human rights defender Ahmad Shahidov spoke about the 100th anniversary of the Republics’ and said that despite the 100 years passed today, the people of Georgia and Azerbaijan live in friendship and brotherhood, and that the two countries have the same position in international platforms.

The other speeches were related to the events taking place in the South Caucasus in 1918 and the reasons for the formation and expulsion of the Transcaucasian Seym. The speakers explained the necessity of the creation of the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan and Georgian Democratic Republic as a logical reason of these events, and noted that the sovereignty of the two nations was undermined by the establishment of the Soviet power.

It was noted that holding such an event in Tbilisi today is a clear example of friendship and brotherhood.
