Pressure on the opposition in Armenia will intensify after the elections – Ahmad Shahidov speaks to ARB24 Television

Armenia is expected to enter a new phase of political developments following the parliamentary elections. After the victory of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s ruling party, attention has shifted to the government’s possible moves against the opposition and the future direction of the country’s domestic political landscape. Legal proceedings initiated against several opposition politicians and public figures in recent months have further fueled these discussions.

Speaking to ARB24 television, political analyst Ahmad Shahidov stated that Pashinyan’s government is likely to strengthen its political control in the country after securing victory in the elections. According to Shahidov, Pashinyan has consolidated his political legitimacy through the electoral process, and his next objective will be to limit the influence of political forces that are perceived as potential threats to his administration.

Ahmad Shahidov believes that Armenia may witness a wave of politically motivated arrests in the coming months. He noted that opposition leaders, former government officials, and political groups with close ties to Russia could face increasing legal and political pressure. According to Shahidov, the Armenian government may seek to carry out a broad purge within opposition circles and neutralize domestic political rivals in the post-election period.
