The future of the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip and discussions over their removal from the territory have once again come to the forefront. Israeli officials say plans are being prepared to relocate Gaza residents to other areas and emphasize that US support would be crucial for such a move. From the perspective of international law, however, the forced displacement of a population raises serious legal concerns.
Political commentator and human rights advocate Ahmad Shahidov, who is currently in Washington, told ARB24 Television that the complete removal of Palestinians from the Gaza Strip and the forced displacement of its population would be contrary to international conventions. He said he does not believe the United States would support Israel on this issue: “I do not think the United States will support Israel on this matter. However, Israel’s security is always among the national interests of the United States. The US will always support Israel; this is unequivocally the case.”
Commenting on the US-Iran conflict, Ahmad Shahidov said that neither the United States nor Iran is interested in a prolonged war. In his view, a long-term conflict would mean the collapse of Iran’s political, economic and military capabilities, while for the United States it would entail significant financial costs. Shahidov said the Trump administration is seeking to continue military operations against Iran at intervals in an effort to bring Tehran back to the negotiating table and push it toward making concessions.
