Today, the high-level general debate of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly opened in New York. Under the presidency of Khalilur Rahman from Bangladesh, world leaders gathered under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Change: A UN That Delivers for Everyone” to address global crises, conflicts, and international security issues.
Speaking to ARB24 Television regarding the matter, human rights defender and political analyst Ahmad Shahidov stated that the 81st session of the UN is taking place against an extraordinarily complex geopolitical backdrop marked by several active conflicts. According to Ahmad Shahidov, the core agenda features the US-Iran confrontation, the Middle East crisis, the Russia-Ukraine war, the humanitarian situation in Gaza, and Houthi activities in Yemen. He highlighted the potential for behind-the-scenes contacts between Donald Trump and Masoud Pezeshkian, both currently in New York, as well as the critical implications of Trump’s scheduled meetings with Gulf representatives for regional security and global energy markets.
Ahmad Shahidov added that the anticipated Zelensky-Trump meeting, France’s diplomatic initiative toward a two-state solution, and the systemic constraints posed by the Security Council’s veto power underscore the challenges facing the future of the UN. Furthermore, he emphasized that artificial intelligence has been elevated to the highest diplomatic level as an international security concern for the first time, noting that this session will ultimately demonstrate whether the UN remains a mere platform for speeches or proves to be a venue for tangible diplomatic results.
