As Armenia approaches its parliamentary elections, political tensions in the country continue to intensify. The arrest of opposition figures, strong messages from Russia toward Yerevan, and debates over Armenia’s future geopolitical orientation have become the main topics of the pre-election agenda. Experts believe that the election results will have a significant impact not only on Armenia’s domestic politics but also on peace and security processes across the region.
Speaking to ARB24 Television, Ahmad Shahidov noted that just over 24 hours remain before election day in Armenia and that political rhetoric inside the country has become increasingly harsh: “At the same time, pressure from Russia is also growing. If revanchist forces come to power, Armenia will once again return to Russia’s political orbit. If Pashinyan remains in office, the peace agenda will move to the next stage, and a final peace agreement between Azerbaijan and Armenia could even be signed in July or August after the elections.”
The political analyst also stated that Moscow does not want Pashinyan to remain in power and is using various instruments of pressure to influence developments: “Economic pressure from Russia on Armenia has already begun. Obstacles are being created for Armenian products entering the Russian market, while warning signals are also being sent regarding Russian gas supplies. All of this is part of the Kremlin’s pressure policy toward Yerevan, and the direction these developments take after the elections will be of great importance for the future of the region.”
